Turistas writer Michael Ross penning script for upcoming video game film; Eric Eisners L + E Pictures also on board alongside producer Adrian Askarieh. Last year, Hollywood trade magazine Variety reported that Avalanche Studios Just Cause video game series was headed to the big screen. The reveal included scant details on the project, confirming only that producer Adrian Askarieh (Hitman) was on board. Now, the same magazine is offering fresh details on the would-be movie. A Just Cause film is dropping in too. According to Variety's new report, Michael Ross, who penned the script for the 2006 horror film Turistas, is penning the screenplay for the forthcoming Just Cause feature film. Also, joining in on the films production is L + E Pictures, led by Eric Eisner, the son of the former Disney executive Michael Eisner. The report also confirms that Adrian Askarieh and Prime Universe Productions are still on board with the project. Askarieh is no stranger to turning video games to films. He produced a film version of the Hitman video game franchise and is also attached to the film adaptation of Kane and Lynch, which will star Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx. Unfortunately, the Variety report was light on further specifics. It did not announce any actors, a possible release date, or any other information on the film. As for the series, the original Just Cause received measurably positive reviews when it debuted on the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Xbox, and PC in 2006. The game followed protagonist Rico Rodriguez, who sowed sedition on the fictitious island nation of San Esperito in a bid to overthrow a corrupt dictator. The game was primarily noted for its outlandish stunts, in which Rodriguez could hitch rides on the wings of in-flight planes, BASE-jump from cliffs, and parasail from moving vehicles. Its sequel, Just Cause 2, was released in late March to a warmer reception. The game retained the 2006 original's open-world gameplay, complete with over-the-top parachute jumps and grappling-hook antics. Players again stepped into the role of Rico, a government agent on the trail of his rogue ex-mentor. Standing between Rico and his ex-boss is a military regime on a fictitious South Pacific island that is made up of everything from lush jungles to snow-capped mountains.
